Artists residency “Beyond Sandy” – October 2013

La Napoule Art Foundation has selected nine New York City artists to participate in our upcoming Beyond Sandy Residency. This program is dedicated to artists affected by last year’s detrimental hurricane, which destroyed entire bodies of artwork and costly supplies.

Artists will spend one month living and working against the inspiring backdrop of the Château de La Napoule. Removed from the distractions of daily life, and surrounded by the spectacular views and light of the Mediterranean, residents can explore ideas, take risks, and create new work. Thanks to a generous grant from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, LNAF is able to assist residents with their travel and material costs.

At LNAF, we are thrilled to offer this opportunity to such a deserving and accomplished group of artists.

Congratulations to: Golnar Adili, Janet Biggs, Jennifer Dalton, John Gordon Gauld, Christian Maychack, Monika Sziladi, Michael Wang, Ghost of a Dream (Lauren Was & Adam Eckstrom)

The storm flooded galleries and studios with a toxic combination of salt water, sewage, and gasoline. John Gordon Gauld, whose studio was in Red Hook Brooklyn, described that “after the flood it looked like an earthquake had hit. I got rashes and my skin burned from working in the water for weeks.” Artists lost entire studio and storage spaces, homes, materials and irreplaceable bodies of work. In addition to the financial burden, they faced the difficult task of rebuilding – often from scratch.
