CHATEAU DE LA NAPOULE OFFERS THE IDEAL SITE FOR WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

The Château de La Napoule and the adjacent Villa Marguerite, situated directly on the Mediterranean Sea, provide inspirational settings and are located in the heart of many cultural sites on the French Riviera and in the regions of Provence. Formerly the residence of sculptor and artist Henry Clews Jr. and his architect wife Marie, the Chateau de La Napoule became an Art Foundation in 1951. Primary missions of this Foundation are to foster the creative process and to promote cultural exchange between the United States and France.

TYPICAL WORKSHOPS AND PROGRAMS

ARTIST LED WORKSHOPS - Painting, sculpture, writing, landscape design, photography, dance, music, etc.

GROUPS OF ARTISTS, WRITERS, PHOTOGRAPHERS - The Chateau, the walled gardens, and the historic village are inspirational settings for artists of all disciplines. The climate and the incredible light of this region have attracted artists for centuries.

ART HISTORY AND CULTURAL PROGRAMS - In addition to the onsite Henry Clews Museum, the Chateau is located near the Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, and other art museums and many interesting historic and cultural sites.

COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY WORKSHOPS, COURSES AND PROGRAMS - Programs as diverse as art history, land planning, sculpture, world health, painting, and landscape design have called the Chateau home. Organized by the Universities of California, Massachusetts, the Sorbonne, and Southampton (England), these groups have returned year after year.

ALUMNI AND FAMILY REUNIONS – In addition to the cultural sites, the Chateau is in the heart of the Cote d’Azur with world class recreational facilities such as golf courses (France’s first golf course is within walking distance), tennis courts, yachting facilities, and sandy beaches.

CULTURAL EXCHANGE, PROFESSIONAL, SCIENTIFIC, AND BUSINESS PROGRAMS AND CONFERENCES.

WORKSHOP AND PROGRAM FACILITIES

Studio, lecture, performance, and instructional space are available in the Chateau, the Villa Marguerite, and the eight acres of historic gardens.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Chateau Museum & Tower Suites - 6 premier rooms, sea or garden views, private baths, up to 12 guests.
Chateau West Wing – 10 rooms, sea or garden views with private baths, up to 13 guests.
Villa Marguerite – 10 rooms, sea or garden views with shared baths, up to 26 guests.

MEALS

Modified continental breakfast, lunch, and dinner can be provided daily or for selected meals and dates. Depending on the time of year, meals may be served in the Chateau or Villa dining rooms, the Tea Salon on the seafront terrace overlooking the Mediterranean, or under canopies in the gardens of the Villa Marguerite.

CULTURAL OPPORTUNITIES AT THE CHATEAU

During their stay, workshop and program participants are welcome to take the guided tour of the Henry Clews Museum and to attend, free of charge, any of the public cultural events which occur regularly at the Chateau.

LOCATION & TRANSPORTATION

The Chateau is located in the historic village of La Napoule, four miles west of Cannes, home of the famed Film Festival. Nice International Airport is only a 30 minute drive from the Chateau. Bus and train service are available as well. The La Napoule train station is a block away from the Chateau entrance.

SELECTED ART, HISTORIC, AND CULTURAL SITES NEAR THE CHATEAU DE LA NAPOULE

LA NAPOULE – Rising just behind the Chateau is Mt. San Peyre with its Roman ruins and spectacular view of the Iles de Lerins, where the Man with the Iron Mask was imprisoned. A boat docked next to the Chateau will take you to these fascinating islands.

CANNES - Site of the famous Film Festival, Cannes has a two mile seafront promenade, a charming Old City, designer boutiques, Saturday Flea Market, engaging nightlife, and fabulous beaches.

NICE - Nice has the Chagall, Matisse, Modern & Contemporary Art, and Fine Arts museums. Stroll along the Promenade des Anglais and enjoy an espresso or a glass of wine at the world famous Hotel Negresco.

ANTIBES - The Chateau Grimaldi is the site of the Picasso Museum. Antibes also has the History and Archaeology Museum, sandy beaches and a daily market.

BIOT & VALLAURIS – These hill towns have long been centers for glass and ceramic artisans. They also feature the Museums of Leger and Picasso, and a Castle which is open to the public.

ST. PAUL DE VENCE – This spectacular perched village has long been known for its art and artisans. Shopping is au courant, while the atmosphere is medieval. The Maeght Foundation, which features the finest of modern art, often shown in its delightful sculpture garden, is just down the hill. A couple of miles away in nearby Vence is the renowned Matisse Chapel.

GRASSE – For centuries Grasse has been the world center of the perfume industry. Free tours show you the painstaking, ancient processes for creating these seductive fragrances.

VILLEFRANCHE & CAP FERRAT – Here you will be dazzled by the majestic gardens, the fine art, and superb furniture collections of the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild. Nearby Eze is noted for its Chateau and the Exotic Garden. Spectacular views and scenery await as you travel the high, middle, or low Corniche route between Villefranche and Monaco.

MONACO – Try your luck at the elegant Monte Carlo Casino, view Prince Rainier’s Palace, and see the impressive cliffhanging aquarium at the Jacques Cousteau Oceanographic Museum.

Centrally located on the French Riviera, the Chateau de La Napoule is also within two hours of Aix-en-Provence, Avignon, & the Italian border.

The La Napoule Art Foundation organizes upon schools requests workshops for the children.

During a 2 hours workshop, children between 5 and 13 could enjoy a tour of the château and a discovery of Henry and Marie Clews fantastic world. After the tour, a workshop is organized in Henry Clews atelier. Children learn how to do clay or decorate a Glick (mold of a sculpture by Henry).

They go back home with their artwork.
